Oktoberfest is today's largest festival in the world. It is generally known for beer, good food, German music, dancing, and an overall German celebration in the month of October. The extravagant festival originated in 1810, when Prince Ludwig (soon thereafter King Ludwig) married Princess Therese and invited the citizens of Munich to the fields in front of the city gates. There were horse races that marked the close of the marriage celebration. The citizens, along with the new king and queen, wanted to ensure there was an annual horse race celebration from then on. The next year, an agricultural show was added, and the festival became what we know today. Although horse races are no longer associated with Oktoberfest, much of the same traditions are the same as they were 114 years ago.
The Central Florida area will be having many different events in celebration of Oktoberfest. All are welcome to the Oktoberfest festival in Casselbury on October 4 and October 25 to enjoy authentic German food, beer, a flag parade, vendor booths and live music. Jake's Beer Festival will be held at Lowes Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando on October 4, a food and beer event. At Whole Foods on Turkey Lake Road, you can sample over 60 types of beer and enjoy food and music. Orlando Brewing will also be celebrating Oktoberfest with beer and handcrafted artesian cheese. All events are open to the public, and will be held at various times during the month of October.
